7 Signs Your Business Is Overleveraged With MCAs
Stacking advances, missed payroll and bounced debits are warning signs. Here's how to recognize them early.
Overleverage rarely happens overnight. It usually starts with one advance that solved a real problem — then another to cover the first.
1. You have more than one position
Stacking a second or third MCA on top of the first is the most common path to trouble.
2. Daily debits exceed 15–20% of deposits
When payments eat that much of incoming revenue, there's little left for inventory, payroll or rent.
3. You're taking advances to pay advances
If new funding goes straight to existing funders, the cycle is compounding.
4. Payroll or vendors are slipping
Late payments to employees and suppliers are a sign cash flow is being diverted.
5. NSFs and bounced debits
Insufficient-funds fees add cost and can trigger default provisions in MCA contracts.
6. You don't know your true cost
Factor rates hide the effective annual cost. Many owners are shocked once it's calculated.
7. Stress is affecting decisions
If you spend more time managing funders than running your business, it's time to explore alternatives.
